The Real Cost of IEB Homeschooling — And What To Do When the Numbers Scare You

I know the moment the price list hits your screen. Your stomach drops. You start calculating rent, school shoes, data, the quiet fear of another notice in the post. You wonder if wanting the “better” matric for your child is selfish when the household is already stretched.
You are not selfish. You are a mother trying to do right by her child with limited resources. That is not failure. That is reality.
Here is the clear truth, and then the clear path.
What IEB actually costs in 2026
To write IEB matric from home you must enrol through an IEB-registered online school. The main options right now are:
-
Brainline: about R50,000 a year in Grade 12 (comprehensive package, tuition only). Their Grade 10-11 fees are not clearly published, so confirm them directly with Brainline.
-
Teneo: roughly R46,000-R76,000 a year depending on grade and format (recorded is cheapest, live is most expensive). Confirm the IEB fees on their site before budgeting.
-
CambriLearn: IEB Grade 10 now, Grade 11 from 2027 and Grade 12 from 2028, so it can't yet take a child all the way to matric.
Add Grade 12 IEB exam fees, which run roughly R12,000-R16,000 for seven subjects depending on the provider (check whether they are included) and by our estimate from these 2026 listed fees, the three-year total for one child can easily reach R135,000-R235,000.
A solid SACAI route (Impaq, Think Digital and similar) can deliver the exact same Umalusi National Senior Certificate for roughly half that amount.
Same certificate. Different price.
These are 2026 fees. Expect increases for 2027.
What this means for you
You do not have to choose the expensive route to give your child a good education. You also do not have to feel guilty for choosing the cheaper one.
The goal is not the most prestigious pathway. The goal is a clean matric that keeps the household standing and the child progressing.
Your practical options (ranked from most realistic)
Option 1 – Full SACAI (recommended for most families under pressure) Choose a reputable SACAI provider. Budget R15 000 – R35 000 per year plus exam fees in Grade 12. Same final certificate. Far less financial strain. Many children do extremely well on this route.
Option 2 – Full IEB Only choose this if the numbers genuinely fit your household without forcing you into extra work, debt, or resentment. If they don’t fit, walk away. A stressed mother is more damaging to a child’s education than a less prestigious exam board.
What I want you to do this week
-
Open a simple note on your phone.
-
Write down your realistic monthly education budget for the next three years. Be honest.
-
Compare that number against the options above.
-
Choose the one that keeps the house standing.
Do not decide based on what other parents are doing or what sounds impressive. Decide based on what your actual household can carry.
You are allowed to choose the sustainable path. Your child needs a functioning mother more than they need the most expensive exam board.
You are not alone in this. Many of us have stood exactly where you are standing — staring at the price list, heart racing, trying to figure out how to protect both the child and the household.
Take the next small step. The rest will become clearer once the numbers are on paper.
