How to Start Homeschooling a Child in Grade R in South Africa
Grade R is now compulsory under the BELA Act. What this means for homeschooling families, how to register, and what Grade R learning should actually look like at home.
Under the BELA Act of 2024, Grade R is now compulsory in South Africa. For homeschooling families, that means Grade R must be planned, registered, and taken seriously.
What Changed with the BELA Act
Grade R used to sit in a grey zone — encouraged but not required. The BELA Act moved it firmly inside compulsory schooling. Homeschooling parents now need to register their Grade R learner with the provincial education department in the same way they would for Grade 1 onwards.
What Grade R Should Look Like at Home
Grade R is not "school in a smaller uniform". It is play-based, language-rich, and movement-heavy. Reading readiness, number sense, fine-motor control, and confident spoken language are the real outcomes — not worksheets.
A good Grade R home day includes storytelling, songs, outdoor play, drawing, counting through everyday objects, and short focused activities. Twenty focused minutes on a task is a strong session for a five-year-old.
How to Register
Prepare a short learning plan aligned to the CAPS Grade R outcomes, a motivation letter, your child's birth certificate, and proof of residence. P² handles the full DBE registration package for R999 — province-specific, legally correct, ready to submit.
